Zeep voor droge handen: wat helpt en waarom glycerine het verschil maakt

Soap for dry hands: what helps and why glycerin makes the difference

Dry hands after washing are not an inevitable side effect of soap. They are a signal that the soap you are using attacks your skin barrier instead of protecting it. The good news: the right soap makes that difference.

Why soap can dry out your hands

Most liquid hand soap contains sulfates like Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Sulfates are powerful cleansers that remove not only dirt and grease but also the natural fats in your skin barrier. That barrier protects your hands from dehydration. When it is attacked you feel it immediately: tight, dry hands after washing.

Industrial solid soap goes through the same process: the glycerin produced during manufacturing is removed and sold separately. What remains is a harder, drier product without the moisture-binding properties of glycerin.

What glycerin does for dry hands

Glycerin is a humectant: a substance that attracts moisture from the air and retains it in the skin. In handmade cold process soap, all the glycerin produced during saponification is retained in the bar. That is what makes handmade soap softer and more nourishing than industrial soap.

After washing with good handmade soap you do not need to apply hand cream. The glycerin in the soap already does much of the work.
