Shampoo without parabens: what are parabens and why avoid them?
Parabens are synthetic preservatives used in shampoo to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth. They appear on the label as methylparaben, propylparaben or butylparaben.
- Parabens mimic oestrogen in the body and are associated with hormone disruption
- They are present in most mainstream shampoos and conditioners, often without consumers being aware
- Shampoo without parabens is gentler on the scalp, contains no hormone-disrupting substances and breaks down better in the environment
- Nature Bar shampoo bars are free from parabens, sulphates and silicones, handmade in Amsterdam from botanical ingredients
Below you will find exactly what parabens are, what they do to your hair and scalp, and how to recognise them on the label.
What are parabens in shampoo?
Parabens are a group of chemical compounds that have been used as preservatives in cosmetics for decades. They extend the shelf life of shampoo by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi and yeasts. That sounds useful, and functionally it is. But the downside is that parabens are absorbed through the skin and accumulate in the body.
Scientific research has shown that parabens exhibit oestrogenic activity. They mimic the female sex hormone oestrogen, which can disrupt the endocrine system. The European Union has limited the concentrations of certain parabens in cosmetics, but they are still permitted at lower doses.
The most common parabens in shampoo are methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben. With daily use across multiple products, exposure adds up.
Why are parabens in shampoo a problem?
The debate around parabens revolves around two issues: health and the environment. On the health side, science is still evolving, but the precautionary principle is carrying increasing weight. Parabens have been found in breast tissue, urine and blood samples of people exposed to them daily.
For the environment, parabens are a clearer problem. They are discharged via the drain after rinsing but are not fully broken down in water treatment plants. In surface water they disrupt the hormonal systems of fish and other aquatic organisms.
Benefits of shampoo without parabens
- No hormone-disrupting substances: plant-based preservatives such as rosemary extract or vitamin E preserve the shampoo without oestrogenic activity.
- Gentler on the scalp: paraben-free formulas generally also contain fewer other synthetic additives, reducing the risk of irritation.
- Better for the environment: plant-based preservatives are biodegradable.
- Suitable for sensitive skin: lower risk of contact allergy and scalp irritation.
How to recognise shampoo without parabens on the label
Parabens are always listed on the ingredient list. The most common are Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben and Ethylparaben. Paraben-free shampoo uses plant-based alternatives such as rosemary extract (Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract) or vitamin E (Tocopherol).
