Zeep en eczeem: wat vermijden en wat helpt

Soap and eczema: what to avoid and what helps

Eczema is a chronic skin condition in which the skin barrier does not function properly. The skin loses moisture more quickly, reacts more intensely to external stimuli and is more sensitive to irritation. Soap can worsen eczema. But the right soap can also support the skin.

Important note: I am not a dermatologist. If you have eczema, always consult a doctor or dermatologist about your skincare routine. This article provides general information about ingredients that play a role for many people with eczema.

What can trigger eczema in soap

  • Sulfates (SLS, SLES) — strip the skin of its natural fats and disrupt the already weakened skin barrier in eczema
  • Synthetic fragrances — fragrance mixes are one of the most common contact allergens. With eczema the risk of a reaction is greater
  • Preservatives — Methylisothiazolinone and similar preservatives can cause allergic contact dermatitis
  • Alcohol denat — dries the skin further
  • High pH — soap with a pH above 7 disrupts the acid mantle of the skin which is already vulnerable in eczema

What can help

  • Fragrance-free soap — no essential oils, no synthetic fragrances
  • Without sulfates — mild cleansing without attacking the skin barrier
  • With glycerin — moisture-binding, supports the skin
  • Mild ingredients — chamomile has a naturally calming effect on irritated skin
