Microplastics in cosmetics are a bigger problem than most people realise. Every time you shower, brush your teeth or rinse off make-up, microplastics can end up directly in the environment via the drain. In this article we explain what microplastics are, what their impact is and how to avoid them easily.
What are microplastics?

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic smaller than five millimetres. They are intentionally added to cosmetics as a scrubbing agent, thickener or film-forming agent. They are not biodegradable and are not fully filtered out by water treatment plants.
In Europe alone, 7 kg of microplastics from cosmetics are washed down the drain every minute.
The impact of microplastics on the environment
After being rinsed off, microplastics end up in rivers and oceans. They have been found in 90% of seabirds worldwide and in the human food chain. Through fish and drinking water, the average person ingests approximately 5 grams of plastic per week, the equivalent of one credit card per week.
Microplastics do not break down. Once in the environment, they are there virtually permanently.
Why are microplastics added to cosmetics?
Cosmetics companies add microplastics to keep emulsions stable, form a thin film on skin or hair, and to provide volume or shelf life. But all these effects can also be achieved with 100% natural alternatives. There is no technical need for plastic in personal care.
