Welke zeep is het beste voor je huid? Een eerlijke gids

Which soap is best for your skin? An honest guide

"What is the best soap?" sounds simple but requires a nuanced answer. The term 'soap' covers a lot of ground. Dove is not legally soap. Many handmade bars at markets are not either. And shower gel definitely is not.

After 6.5 years of making soap at Nature Bar in Amsterdam, here is an honest answer.

First: what is real soap?

In the EU a product may only be called 'soap' if it is made through the saponification process: plant-based or animal fats react with lye and form soap salt and glycerin. Products like Dove and most shower gels do not meet that definition. They are synthetic detergents.

The difference for your skin

Industrial synthetic products cleanse effectively but often contain sulfates that attack the skin barrier, synthetic fragrances that can cause allergic reactions and preservatives. They contain no natural glycerin.

Handmade cold process soap naturally contains glycerin produced during saponification. Glycerin is a humectant that keeps the skin supple. Good handmade soap contains no sulfates, no synthetic fragrances and no preservatives.

Which soap is best for your skin type?

  • Sensitive skin — choose a fragrance-free handmade soap without essential oils. Our Apple & Chamomile Soap is fragrance-free and extra mild.
  • Dry skin — choose a soap with a high olive oil ratio. Our Orange & Calendula Soap is ideal.
  • Oily or combination skin — choose a soap with activated charcoal. Our Charcoal & Aloe Vera Facial Soap cleanses deeply without drying out.
  • Normal skin — almost any handmade soap works. Choose based on scent and ingredients.
