Calendula (Marigold)

Calendula (Marigold): healing flower for sensitive and irritated skin

Calendula, also known as marigold, is one of the gentlest and most healing plant-based ingredients in skincare. The flower has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine for wound healing, skin irritation and eczema. Calendula is particularly rich in flavonoids and carotenoids that inhibit inflammation and help the skin recover. We incorporate calendula in our Orange and Calendula soap bar.

Botany and history of calendula

The marigold (Calendula officinalis) is a plant that belongs to the composite family (Compositae or Asteraceae). The plant is originally from Southern Europe. It is an annual plant with mostly orange, but sometimes yellow flowers. The marigold flowers from May to November.

You can eat the fresh or dried flowers or use them to make tea. The flowers are also used as a coloring agent for cheese, butter and other foods. In the past, the petals were even used as a cheap alternative for saffron.

Among the Greeks there was the myth a young girl falls in love with Apollo – the Sun god – but his rays burn her and what is left behind are only marigold flowers. That is why it has been believed for a long time that marigold has the power to heal the pain of unrequited or lost love.

The use of marigold goes way back even as far as the 12th century. During the American Civil War, the leaves were placed on wounds sustained on the battlefield.

The 3 Benefits of Calendula for the Skin

1. Powerful anti-inflammatory

The flavonoids in calendula inhibit inflammatory processes in the skin. This makes marigold particularly effective for redness, irritation, eczema and sensitive skin that reacts quickly to external triggers.

2. Supports wound healing

Calendula stimulates the formation of new tissue and supports the recovery process of damaged skin. Suitable for chapped lips, minor wounds, nappy rash and dry winter skin.

3. Gentle enough for the most sensitive skin

Calendula is so mild that it is also used for baby skin, skin with eczema and post-operative skin. It cleanses and cares without irritation or allergic reactions in most skin types.
