Orange: circular ingredient with skin benefits

At Nature Bar we work with upcycled orange peel from a local juice bar in Amsterdam. What would otherwise go to waste, we use as an ingredient in our Orange and Calendula soap bar. Orange extract is rich in vitamin C, bioflavonoids and limonene. These compounds give a fresh scent, support the skin and have a mildly exfoliating effect.

Botany and history of the orange

The orange tree (Citrus auratium) belongs to the Rutaceae family and has its origin in China. This evergreen tree with spiky branches and sweet-smelling white flowers (neroli) is loved by many. The fruit of the orange tree is typically round or oval in shape and has a yellow or orange rind.

Not only the taste but also the scent of oranges and even the orange blossom is widely popular. Used in aromatherapy orange essential oil has a cheerful and uplifting yet simultaneously calming and relaxing effect. That can help reduce the hart rate.

The fruit has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. For example, they use the dried peel against colds, coughs and even anorexia. But the use of the essential oil is also popular. The oils are extracted from the orange peels by means of steam. For 1 kg of essential oil you need about 200 kg of peels. This explains why essential oils are often very expensive. D-limonene is the driving force behind the typical orange smell and taste.

Vitamin C in orange supports collagen production and helps make the skin more radiant and even. It is also an antioxidant that protects the skin against free radicals.
