Coconut Oil
Coconut oil: antimicrobial and deeply nourishing for the skin
Coconut oil is extracted from the dried flesh of the coconut and is one of the most widely used base oils in handmade soap. It is rich in lauric acid, a unique fatty acid with antimicrobial properties. In soap, coconut oil creates a rich lather and leaves the skin feeling clean and fresh. We use coconut oil as one of the base oils in virtually all Nature Bar soap bars.
Botany and history of the coconut
The coconut palm is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is a large tree that can grow up to 100 feet tall. The coconut fruit grows on the coconut palm tree and is typically about 6-12 inches in diameter.
Coconut oil, also called coconut fat or according to the INCI name Sodium Cocoate, is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing or extracting the dried white flesh of the coconut.
This oil contains by far the most saturated fatty acids of all vegetable oils, including lauric acid and palmitic acid. In addition, it contains unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid, but also phytosterols, cholesterol, minerals and vitamins E and K.
Coconut fat has antibacterial properties, which provides a strong cleaning effect and provides a lot of foam. That’s why every Nature Bar soap and shampoo bar contains a healthy dose of organic coconut oil.
The 3 Benefits of Coconut Oil in Soap for the Skin
1. Rich lather
Coconut oil gives soap a firm structure and a rich, creamy lather. This also makes the bar last longer and provides effective yet pleasant cleansing.
2. Antimicrobial action
Lauric acid in coconut oil has naturally occurring antimicrobial properties that inhibit bacteria and fungi. This means coconut oil contributes to a more hygienic cleansing effect.
3. Hydrating when used in moderation
In the right proportion with other oils such as olive oil and shea butter, coconut oil is moisturising and nourishing for the skin. A good balance in the soap formula prevents coconut oil from drying out the skin.
Conclusion
Coconut oil is an indispensable ingredient in handmade soap. It provides structure, lather and antimicrobial action. Combined with olive oil and shea butter it forms the basis of a gentle, nourishing and effective soap. All Nature Bar soap is handmade in De Hallen, Amsterdam, using coconut oil without palm oil as an addition.
