Coffee grounds scrub: circular exfoliation with a story

Coffee grounds are one of our favourite circular ingredients. We collect them fresh from cafes and coffee shops in Amsterdam that would otherwise throw them straight in the bin. Coffee grounds are an effective and eco-friendly exfoliant that removes dead skin cells, stimulates circulation and temporarily smooths the skin. In the Charcoal and Coffee soap bar we combine coffee grounds with activated charcoal for a double cleanse.

Botany & history of coffee

The coffee plant is a tropical plant belonging to the Rubiaceae family. The plant has white flowers and red berries. The berries contain the coffee beans, which are roasted and ground to make coffee.

There are two main types of coffee: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica coffee is generally considered the better quality coffee. Arabica coffee has a soft, fruity taste. Robusta coffee is less expensive than Arabica coffee and has a stronger, bitter taste.

The origin of coffee

It is generally believed that coffee was first consumed in Ethiopia. According to legend, a shepherd saw sheep exhibiting strange behavior after eating the berries of a coffee bush. The shepherd tried the berries himself and discovered that they had a stimulating effect.

Coffee was first cultivated in Arabia in the 15th century. From Arabia, coffee spread to other parts of the world, including Europe and America.

The 3 Benefits of Coffee Grounds Scrub for the Skin

1. Effective mechanical exfoliation

The coarse texture of coffee grounds removes dead skin cells effectively without synthetic microplastics. It is a 100% biodegradable exfoliant that can safely go down the drain after use.

2. Stimulates circulation

Scrubbing with coffee grounds stimulates blood circulation in the skin. This temporarily gives a healthier, more radiant complexion and can contribute to less visible cellulite.

3. Circular and collected locally in Amsterdam

We collect the coffee grounds from local Amsterdam cafes. A by-product stream that would otherwise be thrown away gets a second life in our soap. Circular economy in practice, straight from the neighbourhood.
