Glycerine is a natural by-product of the cold process soap-making process. When plant-based oils and lye react, glycerine is formed as a by-product. In our handmade soap all the glycerine remains in the bar, unlike commercial soap where glycerine is removed. Glycerine is one of the most effective humectants in skincare: it draws moisture from the air and keeps the skin hydrated.

What is Glycerin and How is it Made?

Glycerin, also called glycerol, is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid that is created during the traditional saponification process. It can also be extracted from vegetable and animal oil, but can also be made from synthetic ingredients. In addition, it is also a body’s own substance, which is located in the top layer of skin – the horny layer. In short, there are many roads that lead to glycerin.

Vegetable glycerol, is a clear liquid usually made from coconut, palm or soybean oil. It is odorless, has a syrupy consistency and even tastes mildly sweet. It can also be synthetic, and in rare cases also made from animal tallow. But it can also be a mixture of both animal and vegetable oils.

The glycerin present in Nature Bar’s soap and shampoo bars is created during the traditional saponification process and is therefore completely natural and not added.

Glycerin is a safe and effective ingredient for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It is also non-comedogenic, which means that it will not clog pores.

Glycerine is a humectant: it attracts moisture molecules from the surrounding air and locks them into the skin. This keeps the skin long-lastingly hydrated, soft and supple.

2. Strengthens the skin barrier

Glycerine supports the skin barrier by filling the spaces between skin cells. This reduces moisture loss and makes the skin more resilient against external influences such as cold, wind and dry air.

3. Why commercial soap removes glycerine

Most industrially produced soap is stripped of glycerine because it is a valuable ingredient for the cosmetics industry. What remains is a harsher soap that dries out the skin. In handmade cold process soap like Nature Bar's, all the glycerine remains intact, making the soap nourishing rather than drying.
